For embracing his 12-year-old child, Dwyane Wade received tons of love (and insane backlash). The NBA star has now announced that Zion is now going to go by Zaya’s initials.
On Tuesday’s installment of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Wade said, First of all I and my mom, Gabrielle Union, are proud parents of a child in the LGBTQ+ world, and we are also proud allies.
As parents we consider our positions and responsibilities very seriously. So when our kid comes home with a request, when our kid comes home with an issue, when our kid comes home with something, it’s our duty as parents to listen to that to give them the best advice we can, the best input we can get, and that doesn’t change now that gender is involved.
Wade clarified, internally, to go out and get details is our task and reach out to every connection we have. In Pose’s team my wife reached out to everyone. We just tried to figure out as much information as we could to help the best self of our child.
Pose is the FX series that explores the ballroom atmosphere for Black and Latinx, a subculture within the queer community. Wade said that he also supported Zaya, I smiled at her and said, “You are a queen.”
It’s our chance to let you be a witness for now, it’s through us because she’s 12 years old, but it’s going to be through her finally. Wade claimed earlier that Gabrielle Union made him be more open-minded with the character of Zaya.
Wade has yet another child, Zaire, 18, with ex-wife SiohvaughnFunches, the biological mother of Zaya. Even, with Aja Metoyer, son Xavier, 6. He has custody of his son, Dahveon, 17, and Union and Wade welcomed their first daughter together, Kaavia James, via a surrogate in November 2018.
